Australia Day 7: The SS Yongala
Oh. Em. Gee. The coolest dive site ever! Not sure where to begin. The yongala is a shipwreck that occurrd in 1911 and the second longest wreck site to find off Australia. Human remains are still at the wreck site- not one passenger of the ship made it off when it sank. The coral from the great barrier reef has moved onto the ship which makes it pretty, but what it the most fascinating is the marine life that congregates here. The boat ride out is on a little boat with inflatable edges... Makes for quite a bumpy ride, but it was fun. It was our first deep dives (100 ft), and other than colors being harder to see nothing else felt much different than any other dives. The marine life? AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Literally, you are swimming through thousands of fish everywhere surrounding you!! I have never seen so many fish in my life, and could never have imagined swimming through them the way we did today. The sea snakes are very curious and will come right at you and swim around you, in and out your legs and such even- they were freaking cool! Although they are even more poisonous than land snakes they are more docile and would have to be provoked to bite which makes it safe for them to touch on you and you on them and such. Other highlights included some eagle rays (always cool) and a grouper fish (also known as a VW because it is as large as a car). After the dive our guide said it was an average day..... We can't wait to be out there again tomorrow!!! Again, pictures will not do this dive justice- it is one of the top 10 dives in the world, and I highly recommend all divers out there do it!!!!!!
